Palmer couplet project gets a new moniker, another round of talks

The Department of Transportation & Public Facilities will hold another meeting Thursday regarding new routes in and out of Palmer. Once called the Palmer couplet, it is now dubbed PWHET: Palmer wasilla highway Eastern Terminus.

While the name has changed, the anxieties of residents and merchants haven’t.

It’s going to be hard pleasing all, especially those who don’t see the need for the project at all. It’s not like going into Palmer or leaving is one big traffic jam. The signal lights work and people seem to be able to go on their way without a lot of trouble.

This project, though, is one for the future. It’s been explained at innumerable meetings about more than this project that the traffic on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway is only going to increase in the coming years. One only has to look at the bypass road around Wasilla to Knik-Goose Bay Road to see how some of these projects really do make life easier.

So people should attend the meeting with an open mind. DOT says there will be five new routes presented that were developed by a 19-member advisory committee. That means there will be choices to consider, possibly alleviating some of the angst witnessed at a similar meeting last summer.

Downtown merchants in particular were not happy with a two-lane road coming into town and a two-lane leaving town. They saw that plan as a big U-turn that sent traffic past their firms coming into town and directing them past their businesses leaving town.

It looks like Dogwood Street is still in play. That’s the street that would go behind the Carrs store and connect with the highway just before Hemmer Drive.

Having an alternate way for drivers to get into or out of Palmer is a plan for the future and people who drive there, not just Palmer residents, should be at the meeting to hear what the possibilities are since this project affects lots of people who work in Palmer or have regular business there.

The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. and runs to 7 p.m. so there is ample time for people on different schedules to see what the plans look like. It’s at the Moose Lodge. For a glimpse at what the meeting will hold, go to www.pwhet.com.

" I thought the Bogard Extension was going to take a lot of traffice off of the Palmer Wasilla. Instead of this type of project Palmer should be trying to sell it's small town appeal to the companies that are looking for such a place. No big box stores is rare and appealing to companies that are looking for that type of setting. This would be Medical, Electronic/Computer industry etc. How much have we reached out to them? Those companies bring good jobs unlike Big Box retail. "

" Still confused on why this project keeps coming up. I still have not seen the problems that this project is supposed to correct. We do not have much congestion in Palmer. Certainly not enough to cause this type of wasteful spending. There must be other reasons and I want to know more about where this road goes on the Wal Mart Property. I can't help but think this is an answer for Wal-Mart. They are looking for an access route to their property without dumping on to the PW. I still don't understand this project. "

" Actually, that sounds great but you state folks sure do like to gamble millions on someone selling land to make roads people don't want. That isn't the only option and you know it. The man that wrote the book on community thoroughfares told all of us that this idea was a failure and then he listed all the reasons why. He is the true expert and should be listened to, how many citizens remember this man's testimony? Waiting a year then trying it again is a sad tale of the state pushing it's agenda without regard to the people (taxpayer). "

" Rick - just so you know, and the rest of the concerned citizens: the plan actually cuts right through the middle of Wal Mart's property. So, WalMart will not be going in that location if they are willing to sell that property to the State. However, WalMart still could come to Palmer via another location. "

" How much time and money will be wasted on this crap, does no-one hear what the taxpayers say? Who are these folks that want to spend our money and cram their agenda down our throat? "

" If you look at all those new alternatives the one street that exists on them all is Felton Street that will go right next to the School and happens to be the one road absolutely necessary for Walmart to build on their lot. Hate to harp but this is still about Walmart and spending state money unwisely. There are other far more important things to spend road money on then fixing a non existent even future problem. We had an older expert tell us all about how bad this would be for town, let's listen for a change. "
