I would like to respond to the story in the newspaper about ATV abuse in the city of Wasilla.
I take exception to the statement that a few irresponsible riders are the problem. All riders are the problem. Every ATV ridden by anyone contributes to the deterioration of the eyesore trails alongside every road in Wasilla. Kids will always be kids, and as soon as they are out of sight of their parents on these $6,000 to $8,000 toys, they will let them rip. They are kids. That’s what they do.

I can hear the gnashing of teeth already, “My only transportation. I use it to get to work, etc.”
The economy will survive without them.
There is not a city anywhere in the USA the size of Wasilla that condones this behavior.
The city council will ban them completely — as it should — when the number of children killed on them becomes intolerable. What is that number? Five? Ten? Twenty? Just tell me and I won’t waste my time, or yours, until that number is reached.

No, you weren't here first. The Natives were. They didn't ride ATVs! Next came the white settlers and then ordinary people. For your information, three wheelers did not show up in the valley until later in the 1970s. So you were not first. Not even close. Nobody would care if people rode ATVs if you riders weren't so obnoxious about it. What is so hard for you to understand about that? Get over yourselves or YOU GO AWAY, LATECOMER!! "

Last time I checked we live in Alaska, which means we ride ATV's for transportation and for fun. So take away that and you'll make a few happy and many more unhappy.
The same people that oppose ATV's I'm sure are the same ones that complain about how winters are too cold, too dark and that it lasts too long.
It's Alaska, instead of writing letters to the editor of the Frontiersman you should be looking up the costs to move. "

Only abusive riders are the problem. Every kind of vehicle driven contributes to the deterioration of every ditch and road. Kids will always be kids,They, like you learned by example. Enforcement is the ONLY answer. Many take pride in their property everywhere, without laws and enforcement, it would all be trashed. We need to clean up our lifestyle and change the perception that we’re “Proud to be Valley Trash.” But never lose sight that we are different than America. We are Alaskans, Willing to Work together. Talk about going to an extreme! I also agree that it's time to reign in the jerks driving quads at high speeds, jumping driveways and cutting through private property...but to go nutty and say that we should just outright ban ATVs is just ignorant! And who cares about the trails next to the road? Accept them just like you accept the road that you're driving on, the power poles, etc. Sheesh! "

People live here for individual freedoms. If people want to live like clones, they should move to the city and live in boxes.
I like riding ATVs to the store etc. I teach my children to be responsible and we take precautions to be certain they ride with care while protected.
That said, the protection needs to be from adults who are not paying attention. No excuse for their shameful disregard.
Not our fault drivers suck "
