Wasilla senior ready to end drought

WASILLA — It’s been nearly a decade since a Mat-Su Valley swimmer captured state gold. But on Saturday, Wasilla senior Jeff Frey is going to do his best to change that.

Frey, the outstanding boys swimmer of last week’s Region III Championships, will compete in four events when athletes hit the water for the ASAA/First National Bank 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships at Bartlett High School.

“He has the mental strength, he’s got the emotional strength and he definitely has the physical strength,” Wasilla head coach Matt Hanley said. “He’s going to be ready.”

Frey is part of a pair of state-qualifying relay teams, but the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races provide Frey the best shot at becoming the first Valley athlete to win an individual title since former Palmer swimmer Dirk Craft and diver Richelle Knapp each won a state championship during the 2000 meet.

Frey enters the meet as the top-seeded swimmer in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. He won both races in record-breaking fashion at the Region III Championships. On Saturday, Frey would like to cap his stellar prep swimming career with another record.

“I really wanted to get those region records, but the 50 free state record is definitely my goal,” Frey said before his team’s practice Wednesday afternoon. “If I could get that, I’d be really happy.”

Former Service standout Andrew Tainter owns that mark, thanks to the blazing time of 20.91 seconds he swam in 1996. Not only has Tainter’s record stood for 13 years, Hanley said no Alaska high school swimmer has broken the 21-second mark in the 50 free.

Frey doesn’t want to jinx himself, call for the record and fall short. But Hanley has no doubt Frey has the potential to swim his way into the record books.

“He’s already been at 20.5 (seconds) in a relay and 20.8 (seconds) twice in a relay. He’s the only person to go under 21 since Tainter in this state,” Hanley said. “He’s felt the speed, felt what it’s like to go that fast. Get the magic of the meet going, the energy flying, and there’s no telling what he can do.”

Frey knew he had the times to break region records going into the Region III meet last week, but was excited to officially break the marks.

“I had two good races,” Frey said. “I thought it was pretty cool to have my name in the books, to have other kids, like me, to look at.”

The two-day state championships, which start today at 1 p.m. at Bartlett High School, will be the final meet of Frey’s prep career, but he’s hoping to continue swimming at the college level. Frey has not selected a school, but has narrowed the list of possibilities down to three choices — Division I programs Wyoming and North Dakota, and NAIA Illinois Institute of Technology.

Frey, who also swims for Hanley as a part of the Northern Lights Swim Club, is one of nine athletes who will represent Wasilla in the state meet this weekend. Frey is also one of three region champions on that list.

Senior Christian Long is the region champion in the 500 freestyle, and will compete as the seventh-seeded swimmer in that event. Senior Dylan Spargo qualified in the 100 breaststroke.

Long and Spargo also join Frey as members of a relay team that qualified for state in both the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay.

Long and Frey are relay veterans, but Hanley credits the work of Spargo and Kevin Snavley for the continued success of the WHS relay teams.

“They’ve stepped up and worked incredibly hard this season,” Hanley said.

Now, the Warriors are looking for success in the relay events.

“We’re hoping to get a medal,” Frey said. “I think we can do it.”

Ben Fife, Brandon Little, Michael Foy and Keith Pulver also qualify as alternates on the relay squads.

Senior, Rachel Kennedy, leads the Wasilla girls into the state meet as the three-time defending Region III champion in the 1-meter dive. Kennedy will be joined on the diving board by junior Mariah Schachle, the runner-up in the dive last week.

“The diving is definitely strong,” Hanley said. “Rachel is looking better and better, and Mariah is a strong, strong and talented girl.”

Senior Karina Barria will swim in the girls’ 50 freestyle. Barria is seeded seventh.

Also, qualifying for the Wasilla girls is an emerging talent in sophomore Brittany Shattuck, who will compete in the 200 individual medley. Hanley said Shattuck thought she was on the bubble, owning the 17th-best time in an event that brings 16 swimmers to state. But thanks to her time of 2:29.92, Shattuck worked her way into the state meet.

A trio of Colony Knights also qualified for the state championships.

Nicholas Brunger and Katelyn Payne will each swim in a pair of events. Brunger qualified in the 50 and 100 freestyle. Payne will compete in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle.

Alexander Deedy will dive for the Knights.
