PALMER — Matt Jaronik didn’t spend much time off the field during his senior season. And more often than not, the Colony senior was somewhere around the ball, if not holding right on to it.

Jaronik accounted for more than 1,300 yards of total offense and 17 touchdowns. He was seen as one of the top defensive backs in the state, and a constant threat on special teams.

On Sunday, Jaronik was appropriately named the large-schools utility player of the year by the Alaska State Football Coaches Association.

“He’s doing it in all three phases,” Colony head coach Jamie Mayo said during the 2009 season. “He’s doing a great job on special teams, a great job at quarterback, and he’s the last line on defense.”

In addition to being tabbed as the top utility player in the state, Jaronik was also named to the first team at both defensive back and punt returner.

From his spot in the defensive backfield, Jaronik helped lead a Colony defense that allowed only 55.8 passing yards per game, and a state-low 9.9 points per game during the regular season.

On special teams, Jaronik’s highlights included a school-record 92-yard punt return for a touchdown during a win over Kodiak.

As the leader of the Colony offense, the Knights put the ball in Jaronik’s hands during 56 percent of their offensive plays. The quarterback carried the ball 143 times for 589 yards and four touchdowns, and completed 53 of 129 throws for 830 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Jaronik was one of two Colony Knights named to the first team, and five recognized by the ASFCA.

Senior Ben McGraw, another staple on one of the state’s top defenses, was named first-team at linebacker.

Offensive guard Dakota Wainright, offensive tackle Trey Farber and linebacker JD Mayo were each named to the second team.

Palmer’s utility player, senior Brennan Bohman, earned a first-team nod at both running back and punter.

Bohman led the state in rushing during the regular season, and finished his senior year with 1,127 yards.

Senior offensive tackle was also named first-team for the Moose, who also landed senior linebacker Coleman Ahrens and junior defensive back Jim McCall on the second team.

Senior wide receiver Cody Pfeifer and junior defensive lineman David Green represented the Wasilla Warriors with spots on the second team.

West Anchorage head coach and Juneau-Douglas interim head coach Rich Sjoroos shared coach of the year honors. James Watson, of North Pole, was named the assistant of the year.

Linebacker Junior Tufaga, who helped Bartlett earn a large-schools state title with a win over Chugiak last Saturday, was named the defensive player of the year.

West Anchorage quarterback Justin Kauffman earned offensive player of the year honors, while South Anchorage center Dylan Short was voted the lineman of the year.

" If this were really going to be an equitable rating, they would take their names off of their stats after they've been compiled and look at them anonymously. Then have the opposite conference vote for the best in conference. Mind you still don't know the names of these kids. Then for state continue with only stats for the voting and rate each kid fairly. We may then get a fair and equitable voting. One school got a 1st team, because they felt sorry for them, which eliminated the true best from that position. "

" I agree, Valley Fan! He was fun to watch and wish we could stop him! Lots of heart and drive. That's what high school sports are about!!! "

" I have watched all the Railbelt teams play this year. MJ took more snaps and caused more headaches for opposing coaches than any other player in the Valley or North. Lee Jones may be the runner up to him. Both these guys played every snap of every game. There maybe players from the valley who become better D2 player down the road, but this award is for what players did as high school football players. "

Did they earn it wrote on Oct 22, 2009 2:23 PM:

" In regards to hambone, did the kids earn it on the field, or did they win it through a popularity contest. I even think there is some "you vote for my player, and I'll vote for yours" between the coaches. In fact, I know there is. I seen a lot of good football players that never got a look at being mentioned, but did very well, if not better, on the field. Media support also has a lot to do with it. "

" No doubt there is some very good coaches at Colony, but if you frequent the games all season you will see that it is not from the HC or the OC. A change would be great in these positions, and the list of All-State and 1st team would no doubt include more Colony kids. Good job to Palmer, but I do agree with "No Disrespect" and "basketballdad". More emphaisis needs to be placed on the line for offense, but this has always been the case. Without a line nothing else happens. "

" good job to the players that earned the all state awards.
its a tough thing to earn with so many coaches voting for their own conference. kinda like a dog eat dog thing.
colony has some of the best coaching in the railbelt. it woould be so wrong to even think of replacing them...so "looking good" be careful wht you wish for!
    peace "

" How do you get the award for the offensive player of the year when you aren't even the first team at your position? "

No Disrespect wrote on Oct 21, 2009 7:40 AM:

" I find it hard to believe Palmer had the leading rusher in the state and from what I saw the best running back in the state and only have ONE all state kid blocking for him. Something is wrong there. Also not sure on the Lineman of the Year kid (South), I think we could have done better with that pick. Just a thought. "

" Good Job Matt. Too bad you didn't have any coaches behind you. If you would have had fair-to-good coaching you might have earned the Conference Title and had a much better chance at the State Title as well. Hope the folks at Colony wake up and do some house claeaning in the HC and OC coaching. Great luck to you on Saturday, and after High School. It has been a pleasure watching you over the years. "
