Bylaw change makes sense

Why do I support the proposed bylaw change?

When MEA members vote for a board candidate, they expect that person to get started right away working on the issues important to us all. Most would be shocked to find out that new board members must wait four months to be seated on the MEA Board. In comparison, that is longer than it takes to seat the President of the United States, the Governor of Alaska, Borough Assembly Members, or the elected city officials of Houston, Palmer or Wasilla.

The proposed bylaw simply states: “Each newly elected board member shall take an oath of office and be seated within 15 days of the annual meeting at a special meeting or at the next regularly scheduled monthly Board meeting following the annual meeting, whichever date comes first.” This seems to be a very reasonable length of time to seat an elected board member. In fact, it used to take MEA only three days to seat the newly elected board members.

Since the results of the election are required to be certified within seven days after the election, why would MEA want co-op members to have to wait so long to have their representative seated on the board?

" This is a long overdue bylaw change. There is no reason not to do it. If anyone wants evidence of a power-hungry and overreaching MEA management, look no farther than this ridiculous rule.

Vote to change it, and vote to solidify the change by also voting for Peter Burchell and Janet Kincaid. End the days of cronyism and back-room deals. "

Why the wait? wrote on Jan 27, 2008 3:44 PM:

" Why wait so long to seat Board members? Its months longer than it takes to seat the President of the United States even, and something tells me the financial disclosure reports are a lot more complicated there. If MEA used to only take 3 days, how did it jump to 4.5 months? "

Makes perfect sense... wrote on Jan 27, 2008 10:34 AM:

" I don't care who you are voting for, this makes sense. Why wait 4.5 months to seat new board members when the results are certified in 7 days? MEA used to be able to do all their internal housekeeping like checking the financial statements in just three days (a weekend no less)-because they require weekly reporting during the campaign and are checking it as they go. The drug tests they implemented only take at most 5 days to turn around. So why not go back to seating new members right away? It just makes sense. "
